Birchwood Credit Services and RIMBA Partner to Raise $23,000 for Veteran Housing

12.11.2019

One of our favorite parts of attending New England Mortgage Bankers Conference (NEMBC) hosted by the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association (MMBA) is having the opportunity to support good causes via the NEMBC Gives Back program.

For three years now, we have had the honor of spearheading a fundraising effort to support the non-profit charity, Homes for Our Troops (HFOT). HFOT is a publicly funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. The work they do quite literally changes lives, and we’re proud to be a part of that effort.

Partnering with our colleagues at the Rhode Island Mortgage Bankers Association (RIMBA)—who were instrumental in rallying people around the cause—we raised $13,000 in donations. Birchwood then added $10,000 in matching funds to bring the grand total to $23,000. And people are still making donations, so that number is still rising. That money will go a long way toward helping HFOT fulfill their mission.

Most of the Veterans who receive housing from HFOT have sustained severe injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These custom-built homes include accessibility features that restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country. These buildings offer much more than mere shelter; they are homes that give these Veterans the ability to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.

“We greatly appreciate the support from Birchwood Credit Services and their efforts at the New England Mortgage Bankers Conference,” says HFOT Executive Director Bill Ivey. “The funds raised will help us advance our mission of building and donating specially adapted custom homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans.”

This charity is close to many of our hearts for a variety of reasons. Our own Kathleen Brady, Operations Manager in our North Conway office, has a son currently serving in the United States Air Force. “I could not be more proud of my amazing colleagues at Birchwood or the customers and colleagues in our extended network,” she says. “All of these people have fully embraced the HFOT vision and have done an amazing job supporting and promoting their important work. Being a mom was my choice, but I became an Air Force mom because my son, Jon, made the choice to enlist. I am so proud of him, and I am so grateful for organizations like HFOT that provide critical services to the men and women who dedicate their lives to protect our great country.”

We couldn’t agree with Kathleen more, and that’s why we continue to be so passionate about stepping up for worthy organizations like HFOT that provide such critical support to our servicemen and women. As long as they are standing up for us, we will be standing with them and doing our part to show our respect and gratitude.
